March 11, 1977 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-77-40 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially receivad without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

CRITICALITY FALSE ALARM-9:05 a.m., MARCH 11, 1977 A criticality false alarm occurred this morning at this site during the use of a welding unit near a criticality monitor located in the incinerator shed. Subsequent to the plant evacuation and initiation of the site emergency plan and procedures, the incident was determined l
to be a false alarm by 9:30 a.m. and the plant returned to normal ope . - i ating conditions. Although this was a false alarm, offsite local and state agencies, local police, state police, state environmental pro-tection agency, responded automatically.
l Media interest may occur because of the prior accidental criticality incident in 1964 at this plant. The State of Rhode Island was auto-matica11y informed by the facility. A press release is not planned.
Region I, Philadelphia, received notification of this occurrence by
