Tennessee Valley Authority, Post Office Box 2000. Soddy Daisy, Tennessee 37379-2000 September 1, 1998 Mr. Paul Estill Davis, EM, Director ,

Division of Water Pollution Control I 6* Floor, L&C Annex 401 Church Street Nashville, Tennessee 372431534 Attention: Mr. Larry Bunting TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY - SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT (SON)- NATIONAL POLLUTANT DISCHARGE ELIMINATION SYSTEM (NPDES) PERMIT NO. TN0026450 -

ERCW DISCHARGE The permit renewal application submitted in January 1998 describes the discharge of the Essential Raw Cooling Water (ERCW) System to Outfall 101 via Cooling Tower Basin Discharge to the Diffuser Pond. Infrequent maintenance performed on the ERCW System requires drainage of isolated segments of piping. This drair age should be shown as routed to either the Yard Drainage Pond or to the Turbine Building Sump with subsequent discharge through Outfall 101. The total volume of such drainage is normally about 1,000 gallons and could be as much as 30,000 gallons. There is also a small portion of this noncontact cooling water, used to cool nuclear safety-related air compressors, that discharges to Outfall 101 via the Condenser Cooling i Water Discharge Channel to the Diffuser Pond. The total ERCW System discharge is through Outfall 101 as previously described.
