i Discussion The acceptability of gray cast iron as a shielding material has not been dernnstrated because of possible brittle fracture.
Physical testing of the cast iron was pronosed by ?!UPAC. Calculations would need to be perfon-ed to determine the areas of greatest stress concentratinns and nachine flaws in these locations. The sizing of the flaws for cast iron (4 1% ductility) needs to be established. The !PC staff agreed that crack initiation nay be ademnate acceptance criteria considering that the cast iron serves as shielding rather than containnent.
- However, this would depend upon further evaluation of the potential problems associated with the very low ductility of the cast iron.
Subsequent units fabricated would have to be as goed or better than the tested unit. Pecause of the uncertainties involved in denonstrating the adequacy of cast iron, the NPC staff succested alternate designs he considered usinq raterials with greater fracture resistance.
