SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE - THE ACCEPTABILITY OF THE CONTAINMENT LINER C0ATING SYSTEM AT BRAIDWOOD STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 Region III has requested (Enclosure 1) that NRR provide an evaluation of their concerns regarding modifications to the safety-related containment lirer coating system at Braidwood Station, Units I and 2.
Your assistance is requested in reviewing the acceptability of the coating system as applied at Braidwood Station. The prime coat of Carbo Zinc 11 was restored, since it had become aged and weathered, prior to applying the finishing coat of Phenoline 30S.
The restoration consisted of brush blasting the original coat of Carbo Zinc 11 and applying a second coat of Carbo Zinc 11 to restore the original thickness of the prime coat. This second coat was not diluted to 50% as recorrended by the coatings mar.ufacturer (Carboline Company). Midway Industrial Contractors, Inc. and the applicant, Conmonwealth Edison Corpany, filed Nonconformance Reports (NCRs) to address this issue. is a January 28, 1966, letter from the applicant which briefly describes this issue. Supplerent 9 of the Comanche Peak SER, which addresses a similar paint coating issue, may be used for background information.
Please submit your evaluation by February 14, 1986, in order to facilitate the B*aidwood hearing schedule.
