The Commission
- was briefed by the NRC staff on the NRC's programs for accountability and traceability of radioactive materials.
Chairman Zech emphasized that the staff needs to focus their priorities and allocate resources based upon the risk to the public health and safety.
The Commission agreed that IAEA officials should be approached in regard to increasing IAEA's role in notifying and assisting in i
the areas of accidents and contamination events involving radioactive materials other than reactors.
Chairman Zech requested that the staff examine ways to determine if there are problems occurring with regard to accountability of radioactive materials which are not being reported to the NRC and to identify ways of finding those problems.
Chairman Zech noted that if the staff determined that there was a need for additional regulatory actions to protect the public health and safety, it should be brought to the Commission's attention, j
