SUBJECT:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 Main Vent Iodine and Particulate Sampler

Dear Dr. Murley:

On November 26, 1985, with Unit 2 in MODE 5, the Main Vent Iodine and Particulate Sampler was declared inoperable and Action Statement 3.3.3.8a entered consistent with the Technical Specifications for this system. The Sampler was returned to Service on December 4,1985.

The action required by 3.3.3.8a, if the system operability cannot be restored in seven days, is to prepare and submit a Spe'ial Report to the Commission pursuant to Specification 6.9.2.

The reason for the inoperability was a Low Range /Iligh Flow sample flowrate indicator being high out of tolerance. The indicator is located on the Wide Range Noble Gas Monitor detector skid and indicates flowrate through the Iodine and Particulate sampler when in use. This condition was discovered during testing on November 26,1985, however, the monthly channel check performed the previous day had been satisfactory.

During the inoperability period, the preplanned alternate method of monitoring was in effect. This alternate method is covered in Calvert Cliffs Emergency Response Plan Implementation Procedure (ERPIP) No. 4.4.3/Rev. 9,

Initial Determination of Accident Radioactivity Release Rates.
