Dear Mr. Dukes:
This letter is in response to your application dated January 24,1997, requesting

registration of the Model TG-2 gauging device. We are in the process of evaluating your request. However, in order to continue our evaluation, the following information is necessary:
1.
Your application indicates a change in the air gap to 77 cm (30 inches) for low energy gamma sources. This exceeds the max air gap defined in registration certificate NR-109-D-123-B. Please provide external radiation levels and dose assessments for devices with air gaps up to 77 cm.
2.
The rotary shutter in the Description Section of NR-109-D-123-B is stated to be used only in devices containing Sr-90 beta sources with maximum activity of 400 mci. However, this statement was not addressed in the application letter.
l Therefore, please indicate the circumstances in which the rotary r,hutter be used i
instead of the linear drive shutter.
Please note that if ABB wishes to transfer registration certificate NR-109-D-123-B to inactive status, they will need to submit an amendment request to the NRC.
