NRC ROUTINE RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORTS
50-454/97014(DRS); 50-455/97014(DRS)
Dear Mr. Graesser:

On July 18,1997, the NRC completed an inspection at your Byron Generating Station,
l
Units 1 and 2. The inspection included a review of the effluent radiation monitoring
system, the control room and auxiliary building filtered heating, ventilation, and air-
conditioning systems, and the radiological environmental monitoring program. Special
l
i
emphasis was placed on operability, and material condition of these systems.
Overall, the radiation monitors were well maintained and the associated surveillances were
l
performed as required. We also noted that recurrent operability problems with the two
steam jet air ejector monitors, which were identified through your self assessment
program, were being effectively resolved.

Our review identified a discrepancy between the locations documented for some
thermoluminescent dosimeters used in the environmental monitoring program. This
discrepancy has existed since 1989, and was not identified through your self assessment
process. Of concern is that your staff could not verify the actuallocation of the
,
dodmeters, indicating that you may not be implementing the requirements in your offsite
'
dose calculation manual. We understand that your staff was planning to conduct a survey
of the radiological environmental monitoring sampling locations, and we will review the
results of the survey upon completion,

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during this inspection.
