DEVICE TYPE: Radiography Exposure Device DESCRIPTION:

The Model No. 100 radiography exposure device is designed l primarily as a shutter operated-beam type camera for pipeline I radiography. The device we.'ghs 24 pounds (10.9 kg), 19 of which are depleted uranium shieldir g. The exterior housing of the l

device is constructed frcr a'_uminum and consists of a top cover  !

plate, shell, bottom plate, ball bearings for the shaft and the necessary screws to hold the assembly together. The internal

)

components of the device consists of the uranium shielding, a lock box, lock, and shutter control. The shutter control consists of a uranium shaft and uranium wheel in which the source is mounted.

The lock box holds the shutter control and lock. The shutter control engages the slot in the uranium shaf t at c ne end and has I a small handle with an arrow on the other. When the lock is in I the locked position it engages a hole in the shutter control when the source is "ssfe." When the lock is unlocked, the lock push  !

bolt comes only part way. The shutter control can then be  !

rotated 180 degrees until the lock push bolt-stops further rotation. Two set screws hold the lock in position, while a ball plunger engages an indentation in the shutter control in both the

" safe" an "on" positions. This ball plun'er provides a small l

locking action and tends to prevent back rotation if the shutter control is turned too fast. The arrow on the control points to the words " safe" and "on" respectively. A handle, handle arm, hold down bolt and nameplate complete the unit.

The device bears two metal labels. An aluminum label on the handle arm contains the following:

SOURCE IDENTIFICATION r

ISOTOPE CURIES DATE S/N MOD. NO.

i A top cover plate on the device bears a 3" (85.7 mm) company nameplate with the following:

, Model 100 Serial No.

This unit contains 19 lbs. of depleted uranium A subsidiary of General Nuclear, Inc.

Radiation levels at six inches (152.4 mm) from the device surf ace, with a 108 curie (4. 0 TBq) iridium-192 source measured 50 mr/hr (0.5 mSv/hr).

The source is less than four inches (101.6 mm) from the nearest outer surface when in the storage position.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

As of the effective ~date of this document, the Model 100 Radiography Exposure Device is no longer manufactured and distributed by Cumberland Research Corporation. Cumberland Research Corporation's materials license expired on July 31, 1977 and the company is no longer in business.

This device was approved for licensing purposes by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) on October-1, 1971. There is insufficient information on file for this device to perform.a safety evaluation. Therefore, this certificate is being reissued without further review based on the original review and approval issued by AEC.

There is insufficient information on file to perform safety evaluations. The background files only contained tie registration certificate and NUDOCS only had licensing information.

Archive files form Oak Ridge cortain original AEC registration, mostly just correspondence letters between ,

AEC and CRC, a lot of engineering drawings, but little, if any, technicalinformation. Therefore, these I certificates are being reissued without further review based on the original review and approval issued by AEC.
