Panoramic Radiography Exposure Device DESCRIPTION:

The device consists of 3/8" (9.5 mm)

I.D.

titanium "S"

tube encased in a monolithic depleted uranium shield (27 pounds) all contained within a 1/8" (3.2 mm) thick, outer, stainless steel case 9" x 6-1/2" x 4"

( 22 8. 6 mm x 165.1 mm x 101. 6 ' rmn).

Total weight is 38-1/2 pounds (17.4 kg).

The outer case consists of two pieces secured around the shield by capscu ws and filled with epoxy to prevent shifting of the-uranium shield and protect the device from shock damage.

A lock-box is attached to the back of the device and includes a key lock which when locked prevents the source assembly from moving more than 3/8" within the "S" tube. The manufacturer states that radiation levels are within the limits of 10 CFR 34.21 with 5/8" (15.9 mm) movement.

With the device locked the female half of the connector is easily accessible for hook-up.

A spring-loaded snap connector on the drive-cable conduit cannot be attached to the fitting on the device at the lock-box unless the two halves of the connector are properly mated.

A Teleflex crank assembly is used to propel the drive-cable through the drive-cable conduit, through the exposure device "S"

tube, and through the source guide tube to the end cap for making panoramic exposures.

The drive-cable guide tube is 25 ft (7.6 m) long and the source guide tube is 23'ft (7.0 m) long.

Panoramic Radiography Exposure Device EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Radiation levels at six inches (152.4 mm)from the device with a 120 curie (4.44 TBq) Iridium-192 source do no exceed 29 mr/hr (0.29 mSv/hr).

The source is less than four inches (101.6 mm) from the nearest outer surface when in the storage position.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

Sources may be changed using the Cumberland Research Corporation Model 120 Source Changer.

The device manual covers assembly and operation of the device, including the use of a survey instrument; radiation levels associated with the device; and inspection and maintenance procedures SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

As of the effective date of this document, the Model 120 Panoramic Radiography Exposure Device is no longer manufactured and distributed by Cumberland Research Corp. Cumberland Research Corporation's materials license expired on July 31, 1977 and the company is no longer in business.

This device was approved for licensing by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) on July 23, 1970.

There is insufficient information on file for this device to perform a safety evaluation.

Therefore, this certificate is being reissued without further review based on the original review and approval issued by AEC.

There is insufficient information on file to perform safety evaluations The background files only contained the registration certificate and NUDOCS only had licensing information.

Archive files form Oak Ridge contain original AEC registration, mostly just correspondence letters between AEC and CRC, a lot of engineering drawings, but little, if any, technical information. Therefore, these certificates are being reissued without further review based on the original review and approval issued by AEC.
