ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF PROGRESS IN REDUCING LOW-LEVEL RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE INVENTORY i

Dear Mr. Maas:

We have received your letter dated June 3.1997. which describes Siemens Power Corporation's (SPC's) progress in reducing the inventory of stored low-level radioactive waste (LLW). We agree that SPC has made significant progress in i this area as evidenced by a 58 percent reduction in the volume of LLW stored at SPC and by the 50 percent reduction in SPC's LLW generation rate since

, 1994.

t

'In your June 3.1997. letter, you stated that the projected waste reduction milestone specified in your March 1.1994, letter to the NRC cannot be met.

This milestone was gpecified as a reduction in the stored, containerized LLW volume to 26.000 ft by September 1997. The NRC staff acknowledges that this

milestone cannot be met due to the delay in bringing the Modular Extraction / Recovery facility on-line and, to a lesser extent due to the later
