SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE (AITS NO. F0314488)
-On February 8, 1988, Wisconsin Electric Company (Point Beach) submitted LER 88-001 describing a single failure potential in the 4160 volt safeguards switchgear.
It also submitted a 10 CFR 21 report on the matter. Recently, the licensee noted to the senior resident inspector that the original proposed corrective actions would solve the inunediate problem related to the circuit breaker cell switches, but not the potential single failure of the circuit breaker itself. Given the expanded problem and potential generic implications, I believe Regional followup should be by a regional expert in electrical systems.
I therefore request that DRS take the lead in this. Mr. DeFayette has already spoken with Mr. Gardner about this issue and they have agreed this should be a category 2 priority.
