SUMMARY

OF MEETING - NAC LEGAL WEIGHT TRUCK CASK Attendees NAC NRC TT L. Danese IT P. Easton G. N. Dixon, Jr.

D. T. Huang T. Liu H. W. Lee T. Thompson R. H. Odegaarden A. H. Wells C. E. Williams L. Yang Introduction A meeting was held at the request of Nuclear Assurance Corporation (NAC) at Rockville, Mar 22, 1988, concerning the design of a new legal weight truck (yland, on March LWT) cask.

Discussion A description of the packaging is given in Memorandum to the Files dated September 4, 1987 (R. H. Odegaarden).

The following items were discussed in some detail:

Drawing Infonnation Features discussed or analyzed in the safety analysis report. All welds should be shown in accordance with the code.

Non-destructive weld tests should be identified.

Material Allowables Containment vessel allowable stresses will be in accordance with R.G. 7.6.

Other components will be based on material yield strength, 8804200517 880330 PDR MISC 8804200517 PDR

T.c Buckling The staff states that buckling analysis based on ASME code case N284 will be acceptable.

However, if the applicant chooses to perform a classical buckling analysis, the factor safety may be larger than code N284. The applicant must provide adequate justification for the factor of safety used in the analysis for buckling.

Fire Shield A small amount of 8I500 4 covered by thin stainless steel, will be added between the neutron shield tank and the new upper and lower impact limiters.

Need to address gas generation during the fire test was discussed.

Drop Tests (1/4-scale model)

Discussed the need to perform top end drop, side drop, C.G. over corner, and oblique (slap down) 30-foot side drops.

Crush area for cask impact limiters will be determined by a combination of calculations and drop test verifications.

Impact Limiters NAC will provide force / deflection curves and manufactures data sheets for the aluminum honeycomb material used in the impact limiters.
