Dear Mr. MacDonald:
E.I. DuPont De Nemours & Co, Medical Products Department, 331 Treble Cove Road, No. Billerica, Massachusetts 01862 requests an amendment to Certificate 6677 Revision 5 for LP-12 Type B ( ) container. The amend-ment requested is for authorization of a one time shipment of 700 3
curies of tritium lal'eled methane (CH -H ) at specific activity of 4
20 curies per millimole.
Certificate 6677 Revision 5 authorizes the LP-12 container for 32,0000 curies of tritium gas. This amount of gotivity of carrier free material represents 533 millimoles of hydrogen-H, a flammable gas by U.
S.
Department of Transportation Regulations, at a pressure of approxim-ately 1.1 Atmospheres. The requested amendment is for a one time ship-i ment of 35 millimoles of tritium labeled methane, also a flammable gas l
by Department of Transportation regulations, at a pressure of approxim-l Gtely 0.073 Atmospheres. The total amount of methane in the container will be approximately 0.78 liters (22.4 ml/ millimole x 35 millimoles).
The Du Pont Company received a firm order at the beginning of July for chipment of 1400 curies of methane on July 26, 1988, packaged either as 2 x 700 curies in the LP-12 container or, if the requested amendment is not forth coming, in 70 Type A packages, each containing 20 curies of tethane in a glass breakseal bulb. The preferred packaging for better control of packages in transportation, containment of material during transportation along with appreciable reduction in the labor required, for loading and unloading the gas in the containment vessel is the use of the LP-12 container.
