inspection will examine the procedures used by Battello for characterizing and classifying irradiated hardware in response to questions raised by the State j

of South Carolina. As the agreement state authority, South Carolina inspects

packages sent to the Barnwell Disposal Site. Results of this inspection will be useful in developing further guidance on acceptable waste classification l

methods for reactor core hardware components.

Meeting With South Dakota Secretary of Water and Natural Resources l

On July 12, 1988, M. Fliegel of hMSS, R. Fonner of OGC and C. Haupin of GPA i

met with John J. Smith, Secretary of the South Dakcta Department of Water and l

Natural Resources. Mr. Smith discussed South Daketa's proposal to dispose of I

approximately 270,000 tons of sewage ash at TVA's Edgemont site, an NRC licensed mill in the process of being decomissioned. Mr. Smith had written 1

to Chairman Zech on June 14, requesting that NRC allow this disposal. NRC staff told Mr. Smith that a response to his letter was being finalized and j

j that it would state that irt order for NRC to consider such a proposal, the j

request must come from our licensee, TVA.

2 EPA Mixed Waste Workshop The U.S. EPA is sponsoring a workshop on mixed waste regulation in Der.ver, 00, July 19 and 20, 1988. The purpose of the workshop is general information exchange among persons involved with the regulation of hazardous waste and low-level radioactive waste. Attendees will include EPA regional and state RCRA permit writtrs, 00E, and state and corrpact low-level waste authorities.

NRC will be represented by staff frcm NMSS and GPA/SLITP.
