SUBJECT:

NRC Visit to West Valley May 3-4, 1988

Dear Dr. Knapp:

One of the followup activities identified at the meeting on March 24, 1988 was 3

that NRC Low-level Waste Management Division Staff would visit the Project to review the activities underway regarding low-level liquid waste treatment.

Discussions have taken place with Dr. M. Tokar regarding the details of your visit. We have agreed to discuss our program in particular, the confirmatory testing and processing of 39 w/o decontaminated supernatant to solidify the liquid waste using a cement binder. The topics of discussion will be the CSS flow sheet, operational logic and quality testing of cement products, botn production and laboratory. In addition, we will describe our views of a long-term test program which will provide data regarding product performance that can be used as input to evaluate the low-level waste disposal system at West Valley. Ample time will be available to tour Project facilities to examine

, the cement solidification equipment and inspection of test specimens under test conditions.

The meeting is scheduled at West Valley for May 3-4. I am enclosing a provisional agenda for your use. We envision having our contractors available for the discussions during the meeting.
