APR 0 61988 MEMORANDUM FOR:
James E. Richardson, Assistcnt Director for Engineering Division of Engineering & Systems Technology FROM:
Conrad E. McCracken, Chief Chemical Engineering Branch Division of Engineering & Systems Technology
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING WITH NUMARC, EPRI, AND INP0 ON INDUSTRY STATUS OF EROSION / CORROSION On March 17, 1988 representatifes of the Nuclear Management and Resource Council (NUMARC) provided a briefing on industry efforts to implement a program to address erosion / corrosion. The meeting attendees are listed in.
The viewgraphs presented by NUMARC are provided as Enclosure 2 and the individual plant erosion / corrosion data base is Enclosure 3.
Based on the NUMARC data,112 of 113 plants have comitted to implement an erosion / corrosion program for single-phase piping by October 1988. One new BWR is scheduled for examination during the spring 1989 refueling. However, they may have a short maintenance outage prior to October 1988 and will inspect at that time if it's not critical path. As of early 1988, fif ty-four plants have completed inspections.
Components were replaced in 19 of these plants due to single-phase erosion / corrosion. Only one CWR replaced components, demonstrating that the problem is more extensive for PWRs.
For the 19 plants replacing components; 10 replaced more than five components and 9 replaced fewer than five components.
The staff indicated that industry efforts to ensure the initial inspection at all plants was appreciated. However, to reach closure of this issue assurances are needed that all plants have systematically addressed the issue of two-phase erosion / corrosion and have procedurally implemented long term programs for single-phase and two-phase piping systems. To address these concerns, NUMARC is supporting EPRI in the development of a computer based program for two-phase erosion / corrosion. This program is similar to the single-phase program and scheduled for completion by EPRI during the fall of 1988. The issue of a long term program is being addressed by INP0 S0WR-87-3 which recomends long term inspection programs for two-phase and single-phase piping.
The staff stated that 10 plants will be visited prior to the end of FY 1988 to
