SMUD SACRAMENTO MUNICIPAL UTluTY DISTRICT O P. O. Box 15830. Sacramento CA 95852 1830.(916)452 3211 AN ELECTRIC SYSTEM SERVING THE HEART OF CALIFORNIA GG 88-169 APR 0 51988, U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn:

Frank J. Miraglia, Jr.

Associate Director for Projects 11555 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 Docket No. 50-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station License No. DPR-54 UPGRADE OF THE CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM

Dear Mr. Miraglia,

By letter dated December 19, 1986, the District submitted Proposed Amendment No. 147, Revision 1.

The letter contained a long-term commitment to upgrade the cathodic protection system on the diesel fuel oil tanks by December 31, 1987.

The diesel fuel oil storage tanks are protected from corrosion by a coating inside and outside the tank surfaces and by the station cathodic protection system; however, the station cathodic protection system requires an upgrade to conform to the latest standards.

As a long-term corrective action this upgrade is to be performed after plant restart and was added to the Long Range Scope List (LRSL) as item #2566. The cathodic protection system upgrade will be prioritized by the Long Range Schedule Review Group and scheduled in accordance with Rancho Seco Administrative Procedures.

Please contact me if you have any questions. Members of your staff with questions requiring additional information or clarification may contact Mr. 3teve Crunk of the Licensing Department at (916) 452-3211, extension 4913.

Sincerely, tu /nfof&t G. ' Carl /Andogr/ni Chief Executive Officer, Nuclear cc:
