Docket No. 99990001 General License Evenflo-Crater ATTN: Mr. E. Ted Munoz Plant Manager P.O. Box 385 668 Elm Street Tionesta, Pennsylvania 16353 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Special Inspection No. 88-82 On April 21, 1988, Mr. J. Jensen and Ms. M. Taylor of this office conducted a special safety inspection at the above address of activities authorized by the above listed NRC license.

The inspection was limited to a review of the circum-stances surrounding the accidental destruction of an NRO static eliminator device containing 3.5 millicuries of polonium-210, and the performance of surveys to verify the decontamination of the facility, i

Floor areas, the drill press and work bench, personnel clothing, and various i

l pieces of equipment, such as the blow molding machine, regrinder, and the blow molding machine hopper, were surveyed using a Ludlum Model 61 air proportional-counter. Areas of contamination were identified on the drill press, work bench, and several areas on the floor. All areas were decontaminated with tape or i

soap and water.

No additional contamination was found nor were any additional radiation levels measured in excess of background.

)

Urine samples ware taken of several workers, who were potentially exposed to the polonium-210. No positive indication of uptake of polonium-210 was found 4

i for any of the workers analyzed.

Various samples of bottles, chips, and regrind material were also sampled. While the sample analysis indicates that trace i

amounts of polonium-210 might have been incorporated in some product, both NRC and FDA do not attribute any health and safety significance to these levels.

1 However, NRC will perform additional sampling to characterize the nature of

{

this trace material.

I Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were identified, In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice", Part 2, j

Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter will be placed

)

in the Public Document Room. No reply to this letter is required.
