. PERIOD JUNE 20 - JULY-8, _1988 -
Enclosed is the Peach Bottom periodic status report from the NRC Resident Office at Peach Bottom.
Three NRC resident inspectors monitored activities at the plant during the report period.
These status reports are intended to provide NRC management and the public with an overview of plant activities and NRC inspection activities, Subsequent inspection reports will address many of these topics in more detail.

ENCLOSURE PEACH BOTTOM ATOMIC POWER STATION STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD June 20 - July 8, 1988 1.0 Plant Status As of 8:00 a.m. on July 8,1988, Unit 2 and 3 are in a cold condition per the March 31, 1987, NRC Order with oolant temperatures less than 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Unit 3 core is completely off loaded into the sper.t fuel pool.
2.0 Facility Operations Summary Unit 2 is in day 483 of its seventh refueling outage that began March 13, 1987. Unit 2 maintenance repair work is currently underway on 34 of 44 systems. Maintenance outage work on eight systems has been comoleted Unit 3 is in day 282 of its seventh refueling outage that began October 1, 1987. New reactor recirculation piping installation is complete.
Reactor vessel fill began on July 5,1988.
3.0 Item of Special Interest PECo announced on June 20, 1988, that it will implement a new strong and comprehensive drug policy.
This policy will provide for random testing of all employees (including contractors) who are granted unescorted access to its nuclaar facilities.
PECo anno"nced on June 27, 1988, that Admiral James D. Watkins, former Chief of Naval Operations, has been elected a Jirector of the company and has been appointed to the Nuclear Committee of PECo's Board of Directors.
Dr. Thomas E. Murley and his NRR management staff (James H. Sniezek, Thomas T. Martin, Frank Miraglia) toured the Peach Bottom facility on 1"ne 27, 1988. Dr. Murley and his staff met with the resident inspectors ano the plant manager.
4.0 Other Items of Interest The licensee mada three eme*gency notification rystem reports to the NRC during this period. On June 24, 1988, an unexpected automatic actuation of an engineered safety feature (ESF) system occurred on Unit 3 when a 3
j painter working on the control room enhancement modification inadvertently touched a quide wire into the energized leads of a control switch. On July 1, 1988, the licer ee reported that the safety related electrical bus voltage could drop bel,./ the minimum acceptable value during a loss of cooling accident ecncur ent with one off site power source unavailable.
On.luly 5, 1988, a shutdown cuoling isolation occurred on Unit 2 due to a i
high pressure signal.
The results of the licensee's investigation of these cients will be reviewed it! a future NRC inspection report, i

k 5.0 NRC Activities During the period
~
Three NhC he-ident Inspectors were assigned to monitor plant activities between June 20 and July 8,1988.- These individuals consisted of'the following:

- Resident inspector-Areas inspected included operational' safety, shutdown order commitments, radiation protection, physical. security, control room activities and demeanor, reportable events, surveillance testing,' outage. activities, maintenance,-and outstanding items.
One regional emergency preparedness specialist was on site on June 23, 1988, to observe the periodic-medical emergency drill.
In addition, eaergency plan procedures and activities were reviewed. The results'of-this inspection will be the subject of a future NRC inspection report.
Two regional security specialists were on site the week of June 27, 1988.
Items reviewed included the licensee's corrective actions and increased oversight associated with security plan implementation. The results of.
this inspection will be included in the next resident inspection report.
