Kings Park, N.Y. 11754 February 14, 1987 Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission NRC Headquarters King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

Dear Chairman:

I'm writing to you as a conestned resident of Suffolk County Long Island, which is ie '.he state of New York. I'm an ardent opponent of the latest inappropriate move by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to change the rules regarding the opening of Nuclear Power Plants, specifically, Shoreham.

From what I've read in the newspapers, it appears that although both of the governments of the State of New York and Suffolk County have determined that a safe evacuation of coanty residents is impossible if a nuclear accident were to occur, the NRC staff is looking to allow LILCO (the Long Island Lighting Company) to impose its own evacuation plan anyway. I believe that this should not be permitted to happen. Most Long Islanders are against the opening of this power plant, and our government representatives are therefore acting in our best interests as they too oppose this potential rule change.

I'm writing to you to enlist your support in convincing the NRC that this rule change should not be permitted. As the duly appointed Chairman of the NRC, your potential influence in this matter cannot be overlooked.

As the father of two very young children, and an educator, I implore you to do everything within your power to help Long Islanders assure their safety, by permanently putting an and to The Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant.

Thank you in advanco for any help or support that you can lord to this cause. I and many other citizens would greatly appreciate if your office would take the lead in this important matter .
