SUBJECT:
Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 f
License No. DPR-51 ANO-1 SER Item 3.2 (File: 1510,2040)
Gentlemen:
As required by the AN0-1 Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report, the enclosed information is provided to describe modifications to be made to the yard area manholes, ANO-1 SER item 3.2.
The enclosed sketches (Enclosure A) indicate the proposed configuration of marinite board fire barriers to be installed in the two subject man-holes.
In addition to the marinite board fire barriers each of the redundant service water pump cables will be wrapped with "Sitemp" thennal barrier tape.
In fire tests conducted by Wyle Laboratories Sitemp tape was tested under similar conditions as might occur in the subject manholes.
For test number two of the enclosed reoort (Enclosure B), two cables, both wrapped in Sitemp, were placed together in a common tray.
One of the cables was then subjected to a continuous short circuit until failure.
The results of this test, summarized'on page 33 of the enclosed report, indicated that Sitemp was an acceptable barrier material with the unshorted cable sub-staining no visible damage.
In test number three of the Wyle report, Sitemp tape was wrapped on only one of the two test cables in a common tray.
The unwrapped cable was then subjected to a continuous short circuit, in a similar manner as test two, until failure occurred.
The results of this test, summarized on page 33, were also satisfactory as the cable wrapped in Sitemp was undamaged.
It is our contention based on the above test results and on sound fire protection engineering judgment that the marinite board barrier and the Sitemp wrap cables in the subject manhole will provide THIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS 8010280 O %

. adequate protection for the service water csble.
We request NRC's review of our proposed modification be completed at the earliest possible date such that if there are any questions on this item they can be cleared up immediately.
Due.t'o safety concerns for the individuals who will be involved with the installation of this modification, this work cannot be carried out until we experience a cold shutdown of sufficient duration, which at this time is not scheduled until our next refueling outage early next year.
However, should we experience an outage of-sufficient duration prior to refueling and all of the material is available, this modification will be made at that time.
Due to. the volume of material involved, only five copies of the enclosed information is provided.
Should you need additional copies, please contact us.
Very truly yours, haecA David C. Trimble Manager, Licensing DCT:DEJ:1p Enclosures i

Dear Mr. Poser:
This letter is in response to your BLP-12677 dated July 7, 1980. We are generally pleased with the results of the Wyle Lab tests.
Specific responses have been sent to you in our PLB-ll629 and PLB-11770.
I understand that you
~
twill soon begin round #2 of the Wyle Lab tests and we await those results as
- well.
f At this tirne PP&L authorizes release of the results of the first round I
,of Wyle Lab tests to other Bechtel projects for their information or reference at no cost.
We would like to review the results of the second round of testing prior to its release to other projects.
If our review indicates no problem or questionable areas, then our similar approval applies to this in forma t i on.
We at PP6L feel it is irnportant to cooperate in this situation because of the need for communication of a technical nature between utilities, es-pecially those with NT0L plants.
Please contact us if you have any further questions or comments.
Very truly yours,
),
