Dear Commissioner Asselstine; This letter is in protest to the NRC's ruling that local authorities approval is not needed for the approval of an operating license for a nuclear power plant. We feel that local authorities MUST be in complete agreement with whatever evacuation plan the utility and the NRC como up with.

Without this agreement between parties, no 1.icense should be I given. In this case, we feel no amount of planning will be able to insure the safe evacuation for residents of Long Island, and the Shoreham plant should be closed for the alterations needed to convert it to a gas fired plant.

We are not against the use of the atom for peaceful purposes. Nuclear medicine's blessings far outweigh it's dangers and the Brookhaven Lab is performing a great service to the community in their remrch, but usa of Fission technology for power generation is too dangerous. in the near future, Fusion is supposed to be much safer and more economical to use than our present technology. In the intrum, Solar, Hydro, Gas, and even Low Sulfur Coal are more sensible alternatives.

We are sending this letter to you because as the lone dissenter in the vote, we feel that our sentiments and our position on the subject will get a fair hearing.

Finally, we have also sent similar letters to Senators D'Amato, Moynihan, and Markey.
