Dear Mr. Murley:
A teleconference was held on April 18, 1988 between Commonwealth Edison personnel and NRC staff to discuss Commonwealth Edison's proposed design and installation schedule for the AWS Mitigation System ( AMS) for the Byron and Braidwood Stations. The design had been previously submitted in references (a) and (b).
Enclosed with this letter is Revision 4 to "AW S Mitigation System Specific Design for Byron /Braidwood Stations". Revision 4 coratains answers to questions that resulted from the teleconference rientioned above. The specific changes includes (a)
Paragraph 4.3 includes discussion of a second safety related interface with AMS.
This interface is between the AMS output relays and the Auxiliary Feedwater system.
(b)
Paragraph 4.9 was revised to include the generic SER Appendix A information on the output relays.
(c)
Paragraph 4.10 was revised to include discussion of the separation between class IE (safety related) and non IE cables.
(d)
Paragraph 4.12 was revised to include the frequency of the at power testing.
Reference (c) outlined the methodology utilized by Comonwealth Edison to develop estimated implementation dates for the AW S Mitigation System. The specific proposed dates contained in reference (d) for the Byron and Braidwood Stations utilized this methodology and were predicated upon NRR Pre-implementation Final Approval on the specific design.

o Utilizing the methodology of reference (c) with the procurement schedule that is currently improgress, the following 14-month schedule will be required based on NRR Pre-Implemented Final Approval on the Specific Design 1.
Obtain NRR Pre-Implementation Final Approval on Specific Design t=0 2.
Equipment Delivery 14 months total t+14 months As previously discussed in references (c) and (d), this modification is tied to the normally scheduled refueling outages for each unit. Thus incorporating the above information yields the current implementation estimates listed below.
Planned Proposed ATWS Refueling Outagg Implementation Byron Unit 1 Fall 1988 Spring 1990 Spring 1990 Braidwood Unit 1 Spring 1989 Fall 1990 Fall 1990 Byron Unit 2 Spring 1989 Summer 1990 Summer 1990 Braidwood Unit 2 Summer 1990 Summer 1990 Please direct any further questions regarding this matter to this office.
Very truly yours,
