l DISCUSSION OF RESUI.TS O Air Surveillance Air particulate activity declined as anticipated from the peak in June 3  ! and July to levels of approximately 0.15 pCi/m in September and October. High i values were obtained for all locations for the week ending November 10 and to a lesser extent for the previous week. In addition, the samples collected during the last week of December were high at all locations. These increases are most likely due to a-distant atmospheric nuclear detonation which occurred on October 14 and which was seen on the first and second pass over the eastern United States. The agreement between the reference site and the other stations continues to be very good. The monthly average gaena dose rates as measured using thermoluminescent dosimeters shows somewhat more variability than desired. Recalibration and the replacement of older type dosimeters during the first quarter of 1970 should max-imize the precision attainabic and permit evaluation of gamma background variability between locations. Aquatic Surveillance Domestic and recreational waters show data comparable to that from previous periods. Well water continues lowest in gross beta activity and Great Pond remains omewhat higher than the other two ponds. I Seawater values are normal. l Marine life gross activities generally appear normal as compared to previous 90 Sr and 137 Cs in Irish moss and I' values. There appears to be a general decrease of i i rockweed es compared to earlier 1970 values. The reason for this is not known.  ! t j The three available fish values and the lobster values are similar to previous data. There again appears to be a wide range in the lobster numbers. O  !

Reanalysis is being performed on several samples due to previously un-()noticedpoorchemicalyields. This problem has been corrected. Terrestrial Surveillance ' Milk values are generally comparable to previous data. 137 i The Cs and ' 90 Sr values appear somewhat more constant at each location than observed in earlier samples. i Gross beta, gross gamma and 137 Cs data for potatoes is similar to the O i only sample analyzed previously. sr, seen in both samples from this quarter. l J was not found in the 1969 sample. Data from the two locations compare well. Crat. berry values show little difference between bogs except for the wide ,

,      range observed in the 1        Cs numbers. Earlier data showed much closer agreement.
