DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

Air Surv'eillance Air particulate activity was essentially constant during the reporting period based on c comparison of monthly averages. The relatively low values are consistent with the normally observed annual cycle. Agreement between reference, on-site and of f-site stations continues to be satisfactory.
Examination of data from individual weekly periods namely 1/12-1/19 and 3/23-3/30 indicates sudden increases of short duration.
These are due to the atmospheric nuclear tests held on January 7 and March 17.
Camma dose rate measurements made using thermoluminescent dosimeters are given in this report in terms of gross dose rate.

An extensive testing program extending over twelve months has per-v mitted determination of individual inherent dosimeter backgrounds on a relative basis and individual dosimeter response.
For dosimeters assigned to each specific location, the inherent dosimeter back-grounds are normalized to that of a particular (Series D & B) dosimeter at that location. The results obtained from the monthly reading should, therefore, be independent of individual dosimeter characteristics. Data from this period when treated in this manner show very good agreement and will permit reliable measurement of changes in environmental radiation levels.
A more detailed description of the test methods and dose-rate calculations and a presentation of data from previous periods will appear in the next quarterly report.

Aquatic Surveillance fM V
Va10es obtained from analysis of pond water are con-sistent with those shown previously. Great Pond continues to be higher than the other two surface waters.
Several well water gross beta values are significantly higher thin those noted previously.
In addition, the March gross gamma value from Lout Fond well (LW) is very high and the gamma spectrum indicated the presence of naturally occurring nuclides. A second sample, taken later in March, showed much less gamma activity. An investigation of the well operation has found that this well is now operated on a rather infrequent basis than has been the case previously. It is probably that LW results are no longer representative of the previous aquafier. Further investigation of this sampling location is underway.
V Seawater and marine life results are comparable with previous data except for the 137 value on the quarterly composite.
Cs An original value of 2.2 pCi/1 was obtained from analyzing a 151 composite. Analysis of a 5.91 composite made-up of the remainder of monthly samples gave 0.94 pCi/1. The reason for the high values and variability is not known. No additional sample is available for analysis.
Terrestrial Surveillance Milk samples gave values similar to those seen previously.
It should be noticed that the Hingham dairy is closed and therefore, no longer available as a sampling location.
Bridgewater will thus serve as the reference location.
Results from three cranberry samples are comparabic to previous data.

SUMMARY
The pre-operational environmental radiation surveillance program appears to be providing the baseline data that will be required for determining the operational effects of the plant on the environment. The variability between sample types, collection periods and locations is as expected.
No program changes are recommended at this time.
