Dear Mr. Eicheldinger:

SUBJECT:

UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF WESTINGHOUSE RECORDS We need additional infonnation to complete our assessment of the Westinghouse underground record storage facility in Boyers, Pennsylvania. We find the x

Westinghouse facility acceptable for storage of lifetime /" permanent" records i when duplicate records are stored at a remote location. We also find the

\\

Westinghouse facility acceptable for storage of " nonpermanent" records even N

s when there are no duplicates, However, we understand that a number of lifetime /" permanent" records of rel-atively early nuclear plants are stored in the Westinghouse facility without duplication at a remote location.

In order to determine whether or not to

" grandfather" the storage of these records at this Westinghouse facility, we request that you identify the plants involved and provide us with per-tinent infonnation regarding the following:

a) Whether 'or not any records have been inadvertently destroyed at i

the entire Boyers, facility by fire or other means.

.\\

\\

b) Recent or planned actions by Westinghouse and the operator of

\\

the Boyers facility to reduce the potential for inadvertent s

destruction of records stored at the facility.

c) Any organizations that Westinghouse is aware of that use the facility for storage of vital records (per t1FPA No. 232) with-out duplication at a remote location.

d) Other facts which could affect our decision.

We will request that the Office of In'spection and Enforcement periodically inspect the facility to verify its acceptability as noted above.

I Please respond to this letter within 30 days of receipt so that this matter an be closed. We look forward to your response.
