In the Matter of 6 <AS g

NORTHERN STATES POWER COMPANY Docket No. 50-263 (MonticelloNuclearGenerating Plant,UnitNo.1)

NRC STAFF REQUEST FOR EXTENSION OF TIME b

On October 13, 1978, this Atomic Safety and Licensing Board issued a Memorandum and Order in which it requested briefings from the' parties by November 15, 1978, addressing the question of the issuance of a full-term license to Monticello pending a resolution of ATWS questions.

The Regulatory Staff is at this time preparing a report to the advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards for submission in December which will include, among other things, staff views on the implications of and requirements for protection against ATWS for operating nuclear power plants. Since this report will be of key importance for the response of the Staff to the Board pursuant to the Order of October 13, 1978, the Staff respectfully moves for an extension of time until January 5, 1979 for such response.

1 I have spoken with counsel for the Licensee and counsel for MPCA who have authorized me to state that they have no objections to this motion.
