It is our understanding, pursuant to Reference (1) above, that RegGuide 5.7 is being rewritten and updated whicn will result in additional guidance for installation and use of metal and explosives detectors and x-ray units.
UNC has already purchased enough metal detectors to comply with the particular upgrade reo,uiring 100% searches.
We have, however, placed a "hold" on the acquisition of more explosives detectors and x-ray units until we have an idea of what guidelines will be provided by NRC in its rewrite of 5.7 (which, we further understand will be reissued as a Nureg).
This action by UNC could clearly have an effect on the May and August com-pliance dates specified in UNC's License Condition 9.5 cousing them to be exceeded.

It is, therefore, imperative that UNC receive guidance as to metal and explosives detectors and x-ray units before proceeding further.
A prompt response is respectfully requested.
