'% , , , , , ! June 29, 1988 MEMORANDUM FOR: Edward L. Jordan FROM: C. J. Heltemes, Jr.

SUBJECT:

MEETING WITH NUMARC On June 33, NUMARC management (Joe Colvin, Tom Tipton, Bill Rosin and Tom Price) briefed you and other senior AE00 management on the status of their organization and activities. The meeting was requesteo by NUMARC as part of their responsibilities as the primary interface with the NRC or generic operational and technical regulation issues.

The NUMARC organization and relationship to other industry organizations, such as INPO, were summarized. It was noted that the current NUMARC organization numbers about 40 total, including secretaries, ano the total may go as high as 60 individuals. Also noted was that the NUMARC Board has representatives from all operating plant owners (either the CEO, 000 or senior nuclear executive) and an 80% vote of the Board is required to adopt a formal industry position or policy.

NUMARC discussed their "priority issues" classification method indicating that the evaluation process considered four criteria: generic applicability; importance to safety, reliability or economics; need for NUMARC action or involvement; and other factors such as NRC, Congressional or public concern.

Based upon this evaluation, an assignment of each issue is made into one of four categories: priority issues; monitored issues; potential issues; or other important issues. Se'aral examples of issues on each list'were identified.

The meeting was a status summury only. There were no agreements, committnents or recommendations by either NUMARC or the NRC attendees.
