We have received your letter dated January 8, 1997, in which you requested renewal of your Quality Assurance (0A) Approval for Radioactive Material Packages No. 0838. Revision No. O.

Please note that, with your request, your QA Program Approval is under timely renewal and you may continue your transportation activities in accordance with your current GA program.

At' this-time, however, for Part 34 licensees, we are not issuing Certificates of Approval for renewal of OA Programs as in the past because the applicable regulations are goinc to change in the near future.

Specifically,10 CFR Part

34. " Licenses for Radiogra)hy and Radiation Safety Requirements for Radiogra) hic Operations." las been revised and will be effective in early 1997. Tie revised 10 CFR Part 34 will include the requirements for 0A activities such as procurement, use, maintenance, and repair of Type B packages (i'.e.. radiography cameras or overpacks) designed to transport sealed sources used for radiography.

The need to apply separately for an NRC OA

)rogram approvahwill no longer be required after the revised 10 CFR Part 34 las been implemented.
