Dear Mr. Shibasaki:
Thank you for your letter of November 21, 1996 notifying me of the commercial operation of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Kashiwazaki Kariwa Unit Number 6 Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) and for the enclosed information on the unit.
I appreciate your gracious invitation to attend the official dedication, but because of a demasding schedule in Washington, I must decline.
I did make a technical tour of ts % iwazaki Kariwa Units Number 6 and 7 when I visited Japan in April last year, and was very impressed with what I saw. The project has been a true international collaboration.
In its design, construction, and inspection process, the Kashiwazaki Kariwa ABWRs set new standards for the light water reactor and I wish TEPC0 many years of safe operation.
