Dear Mr. Artigas:
JSniezek JSpraul The purpose of this letter is to inform you of the intended staff audit of the ABWR design quality assurance. Although GE is the sole applicant for the design certification, the ABWR design was a joint ttchnical effort between Hitachi, Toshiba and GE. Because of this joint design effort, special
^
attention to the Appendix B design QA requirements is warranted; especially for those pcrtions of the ABWR designed by Toshiba and Hitachi.
The purpose of the audit will be to review a representative portion of the total ABWR design process; however, special emphasis will be placed on those portions of the design attributable to Toshiba and Hitachi.
It is intended that this audit will provide the basis for the staff's review of the ABWR as it relates to design QA. Also, it is anticipated that the system design information accuired through the audit will facilitate the other SRP reviews carried out in support of the NRC's design certification process.
The audit will be conducted by an interdisciplinary team of approximately 10
~
experienced staff people over a 5 day period. The special audit team will be compromised of hRR staff experienced in t'ne following review areas: Reactor Systems, Plant Systems Instrumentation and Control Systems, Structural Engineering and Quality Assurance. Where appropriate, those assigned to the QA audit team are the regular assigned ABWR systems reviewers.
The audit will be preceded by a short initial visit by 3 staff members February 23-25, 1988, to identify areas of importance on which the audit team members should focus their attention.
It is expected that the full team audit will take place in late April 1988. Members of your staff were previously informed of the details of this audit.
If you have questions regarding this audit please contact me at (301) 492-1104.
