REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: NR-420-S-839-S DATE: February 16, 1996 PAGE 2 OF 4 SEALED SOURCE TYPE: Beta Gauge Source DESCRIPTION:

The Model S-6 sealed source consists of a monel metal capsule 2" (5.08 cm) in diameter by 9/16" (1.43 cm) high having a thin window. Krypton is introduced through a 0.059" (1.5 mm) diameter copper tube by standard filling techniques. Each capsule is supported by means of holes at 120* on the capsule flange.

l LABELING:

The source is not labeled directly since it is an integral )

component of the device.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:  !

The sealed source was designed for use in beta thickness gauges to measure thickness of materials in industrial environments.  ;

Expected operating conditions for the gauges are: 1

  • Temperature - up to 300'F (149'C)
  • Humidity - up to 100%
  • Vibration - industrial conditions at. slight to. moderate vibration PROTOTYPE TESTING:

i l LFE was unable to provide information on testing of prototype l sources. However, LFE has indicated the Model S-6 sealed source l was first distributed in the early 1960's and LFE has received no l reports of leakage of the source. i i

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

LFE was unable to provide information concerning radiation levels around the source. However, LFE has indicated that the sources were designed for use in LFE beta gauges and the gauges were typically designed to not exceed 5 mR/hr (50 pSv/hr) at 12" (30.5 cm).

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • The sealed source has been distributed to specific licensees of NRC or Agreement States. I I
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.
  • This registration sheet and the information contained within l the references shall not be changed without the written l consent of the NRC.  ;

l SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

1 In 1969, LFE sold its source distribution business to International Chemical and Nuclear Corporation. Therefore, LFE has not distributed the Model S-6 since 1969. Prior to 1969, LFE distributed 92 sources. l
