REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURC3S AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE l (CORRECTED PAGES 2 AND 3 - OC'IOBER 6, 1995) i l NO.: NR-536-D-804-S DATE: June 23, 1995 PAGE 2 OF 4 1

I DEVICE TYPE: Detector Cell l l

DESCRIPTION:

The Model 009-0173 has the tritium foil mounted within a stainless steel cylindrical chamber body; the resilience of the foil holds it in place along the wall of the chamber. A stainless steel cover is attached to the body with 6 machine screws. A viton O-ring seals the cover to the body. The Model ,

009-0009 consists of a Model 009-0173 electron capture detector l (ECD) cell, a heater, a power supply and a non-adjustable sealed j thermostat designed to limit the maximum operating temperature to 225'C (437'F).

LABELING:

The Model 009-0173 detector cell is labeled with the radiation symbol, model number, serial number, isotope, activity, date of l l measurement, maximum suggested operating tempera'ture, and the l words " CAUTION-RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL". The outer housing of the l Model 009-0009 is labeled with the radiation symbol, maximum  !

suggested operating temperature, and the words " CAUTION-RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL".

CONDI'D1ONS OF NORMAL USE:

The devices are designed to produce an ionized atmosphere for quantitative or qualitative measurement of elements in gas streams. It is an integral component of Perkin-Elmer gas chromatographs and will be used in ambient laboratory conditions.

The detector is designed for operational temperatures of up to l

225'C (437'F) . The foil source is fully shielded in the ECD cell and the gas chromatograph operator is not required to handle or service either the source or the detector cell.

l PROTOTYPE TESTING:

These devices were manufactured and distributed under an NRC specific license by the Perkin-Elmer from 1967 to 1976.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS: I Since the walls of the detector cell are far in excess of the ,

range of the maximum energy particles emitted from the contained 1 source, surface readings on the cell are not expected to exceed ambient background levels.

OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

Perkin-Elmer submitted the quality control program followed for manufacture of the devices and the program was deemed acceptable for licensing purposes by NRC.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • The device has been distributed to persons specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.
  • This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Since 1976, these devices have not been manufactured or distributed by the Perkin-Elmer nor has Perkin-Elmer provided any services for persons using the devices. Perkin-Elmer does not have an accurate record of the number of devices distributed but believes only a few, if any, are still in use. This is due to l the decay of the source and the advancements in technology.

l However, based on the information submitted and the years of usage of the devices, we continue to conclude the devices are acceptable for licensing purposes.
