Amendment No. 42 to Renewed Facility Operating License No. R-37 for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Research Reactor regarding the Nuclear Safety System Digital Upgrade (EPDI No. L-2016-LLA-0003)

This letter supplements a similar letter dated 21 April 2020 which described the need for a time extension for implementation of the Nuclear Safety System digital upgrade, as a result of facility lockdowns for the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVOD-19) public health emergency (PHE). On 4 December 2019, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Amendment No. 42 to Renewed Facility Operating License No. R-37 for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research Reactor (MITR), with an implementation deadline of 180 days for this upgrade. With the letter dated 21 April 2020, MIT requests approval from NRC to be authorized to implement License Amendment No. 42 within 180 days after the MITR can resume normal staffing levels due to relaxation of the COVID-19 PHE restrictions.

Again, MIT is committed to this upgrade, and will be making the license amendment transition a top priority once normal staffing can be resumed.
