July 24,1997 LIC-97144 NA-970270 Mr. Scott Sandorf National Marine Fisheries Service Northeast Region One Blackburn Drive Gloucester,MA 02173 Seabrook Station Seal Entraoment-July 20.1997 North Atlantic Energy Service Corporation (Nonh Atlantic) hereby reports the entrapment of a seal at Seabrook Station. The seal was removed from Seabrook Station's Circulating Water System screen wash debris on July 20,1997. North Atlantic notified the National Marine Fisheries Service of this entrapment incident by telephone'. The New England Aquarium picked up the seal on Tuesday, July 22,1997 in order to perform a necropsy in the near future.

2 This report is made in response to the National Marine Fisheries Service letter dated January 5,1995, recommending that North Atlantic repon seal entrapment incidents. The attached seal entrapment incident report is enclosed as requested.

3 North Atlantic submitted an application for a Small Take Exemption Permit on June 13, 1997 for the j incidental taking of seals pursuant to Section 101(a)(5)(A) of the Marine Mammal Protection Act and in  :

Species Identification: Appears to be a harbor seal

Description / Condition of Seals
Appears to be a young-of-the-year harbor seal in good condition with some abrasion to the head. Weight is about 30 pounds.

l Reporter: Ronald A. Sher, Senior Scientist Recent Seal Observations: One intact seal was recovered on June 17,1997. An incident 4

report was submitted to the NMFS . Necropsy results by the

New England Aquarium showed that this seal was a young-of-( the-year male gray seal.

Recent Fish Entrapment: Several dozen pollock and ten cod were impinged during the week prior to the July 20,1997 entrapment incident. l i

i Cooling Water Intake Temperature at Approximate Time of Entrapment: 50 F i Plant Power Level at Time of Entrapment: Seabrook Station was operating at 100 percent.
