Fuel Storage Criticality Analysis Methodology Gentlemen:

Please find enclosed a copy of a report titled "Validation of the YAEC Criticality Safety Methodology", prepared by Yankee Atomic Electric Company,-

for your review and approval. The enclosed report demonstrates the validity of three new calculational paths used in licensing calculations for Maine Yankee fuel storage criticality analyses.

The methodology described in the enclosed report is being used in the criticality safety evaluation for higher enriched fuel that we plan to use in core cycle 11. Presently, we expect to begin receiving fuel on approximately September 1, 1988 for the upcoming refueling outage. Accordingly, we are submitting these methodology changes as far in advance as possible to permit adequate time for the staff's review and approval. Maine Yankee is prepared to meet with the staff to aid them in their review if desired.

An application fee of $150 is enclosed pursuant to 10CFR170.

He anticipate submitting a license amendment request for higher fuel enrichment and the criticality analysis for the spent fuel pool and the new fuel storage area during April 1988. '

Please contact us if you have any questions on the enclosed report or our anticipated schedule for future submittals.

. Very truly yours, HAINE YANKEE ,
