t On' June'24,1997, th' NRC completed an inspection at your Braidwood Nuclear Power.'

A

Station, Uniti1' and 2.' The' purpose of this inspection was to review the solid radioactive

waste processing and shipping program and the radiological environm' ental monitoring

j

' program l) The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.

-

Strengths were observed in,the radioactive material and radioactive wasto shipping

3 program. -In particular, your staff demonstrated a conservative and thorough approach in

3

the preparetion and conduct 'of radioactive'shiprrmnts. : Although some problems were

identified cew.:erning information contained in the 1995 'and 1996 Annual Radiological

'i

"

Environmental Operating Reports, the radiological environmental monitoring program was

,

g

f also; properly implemented. We recognize and encourage rmasures completed and planned

!

^

by your staff to reduce the impact of liquid effluent releases on the environment.~

r:

,

[t

One violation of NRC requirements was identified concerning the failure of your radiation

'

E

' protection staff to take required actions when annual radioactive waste stream scaling

)

'

factor results were not within acceptance criteria. We are concemed that the failure to

,

take these actions could potentially result in the incorrect characterization of radioactive

U

wastes, in addition, we observed that while a March 1997 audit of the radioactive waste

- management and radioactive shipping programs was thorough in reviewing the content of.

]

p',

the programs and procedures it was not as effective in reviewing progicm implementation,
