20555 Gentlemen:

Special Report Limiting Condition for Operation (LCO) 3.7.9 of the Trojan Technical Specifications requires submittal of a Special Report if a 3-hour fire barrier is nonfunctional for greater than 7 days.

On January 28, 1988, the following fire barriers ware determined to be nonfunctional:

1.

The south wall of the east Emergency Diesel Generator Room.

2.

The south wall of the west Emergency Diesel Generator Room.

3.

The south wall of the turbine building Electrical Switchgear room.

None of these walls had a seal between it and its adjacent wall sufficient to provide a 3-hour fire barrier.

The fire barriers were determined to be inoperable during an engineering inspection of the seismic separation areas for the Emergency Diesel Generator rooms and the Electrical Switchgear room.

The barriers appeal to be f r om original construction and do not comply with current standards.

The compensatory measures of Technical Specification 3.7.9 (checking local smoke detectors and establishing an hourly fire patrol) were established as required.

It is expected that these barriers will be upgraded to comply with current standards by August 1, 1988.

Sincerely N
