REPORT FOR ANALYSIS OF SEDIMENT SAMPLES FROM WESTINGilOUSE ELECTRIC, COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA (RFTA NO.
97-8)
Dear Mr. Gloersen:
The Environmental Survey and Site Assessment Program (ESSAP) of Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) performed gamma spectroscopy analysis of two sediment samples from Westinghouse Electric Company, located in Columbia, South Carolina. The samples were identified as Congaree River and Wet Weather Stream and were evaluated for uranium and other identifiable photopeaks.' Both samples indicated only background levels of uranium. The Congaree River uranium concentrations were 1.9 1.4 and <0.3 pCi/g for U 238 and U-235, respectively. The Wet Weather Stream uranium concentrations were 0.7
Uncertainties represent the 95% confidence level, based only on counting statistics. No other radionuclides were identified above normal background levels. Per our phone conversations, gamma spectroscopy analysis provided sufficient confirmatory measurements. Consequently, gross alpha and isotopic uranium analyses specified in the original RFTA were not performed.
