INSPECTION NO. 50-309/93-18
This transmits the July 28 through August 29,1993, routine inspection findings of Messrs.
C. Marschall, W. Olsen, and P. Sena at the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Plant, Wiscasset,

Maine. These findings were based on observations of activities, interviews, and document
reviews, and have been discussed with Mr. Blackmore of your staff.
During the inspection, we noted good plant management involvement in daily outage
activities. Your identification of a possible generic issue related to malfunction of RMS-9
,
overcurrent trip relays was appropriate. However, we noted a failire to properly compensate
'
for an inoperable fire hose station in accordance with technical specification requirements and
i
station tagging procedures. This violation is not being cited because you promptly identified
and corrected the situation and the impact on safety was small. Overall, the inspectors noted
good material condition of emergency diesel generators during the refueling outage
preventive maintenance activities,
in accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice", a copy of this letter and
its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
