NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION h
y WASHINGTON. D C. 20555

JUL15EE FEMORANDtf FOR: Carlton C. Kamerer, Director Office of Congressionel Affairs FROM:
Thomas A. Rehm Assistant for Operations, EDO
SUBJECT:
QUESTIONS REGARDING CHAIRMAN PALLADIN0'S MAY 10, 1985 LETTER TO CHAIRMAN UDALL ON THE SEQUOYAH PRESSURE TRANSMITTER Dr. Myers' May 14, 1985 letter contained a number of questions regard-ing Chaiman Palladino's May 10, 1985 letter to Chairman Udall.
Some of those questions are answered in the NRC headquarters fact-finding team's April 18, 1985 report.
This is included as Enclosure
- 1. Enclosure 2 provides answers to the questions that are not answered by Enclosure 1.
One of Dr. Myers' questions, item 5.B. involves the issue of when Sequoyah site management became aware of the non-conformance reports and failure evaluation-engineering reports for the subject pressure transmitters.
The answers provided in Enclosure 2 are based on the information obtained in preparing the staff's report, Enclosure 1.
However, based on the NRC staff's conversations with Dr. Myers, we are looking into this matter.
Thus, our response to this question may change.
The recent TVA NSRS report on the Sequoyah Containment pressure trans-mitters NCRs is being reviewed by the staff.
Dr. Myers' June 10, 1985 note contains a number of questions regarding this report.
It is our understanding that while he is particularly interested in this subject, he did not request written responses to your questions. The staff will contact him directly when its evaluation is complete.
Dr. Myers also has sent a number of notes to the NRC staff on a vari-ety of subjects relevant to TVA.
I understand that these questions have been sent in the vein of providing us with his thoughts, and that he does not necessarily want formal responses.
We appreciate his perspectives on these matters.
To ensure proper agency coordination
,~ _
I i
C. C. Karcerer in the future, he should provide his questions through OCA so that one central point of contact can be maintained. Also, to ensure that we do not misunderstand his request, he should indicate when he desires formal responses.
