O MEETING REPORT ON COMMISSION-REQUESTED CONNECTOR TESTS Name of Authy,:

Ronald Feit Date and Place: October 12,197P, Bethesda, Maryland Pa rticipants :

W. Rutherford, L. Tripp, D. Mcdonald, D. Sullivan A. Szukiewicz, P. Shemanski

Purpose:

To discuss the Commission - Requested connector test program Discussion:

The meeting was called to discuss the choice of a second connector for the Commission requested test program.

The Conax connector is a pressure seal connection and not a pin and socket type of connector of the type previously tested at Sandia.

It was agreed to proceed with the Conax procurement, however, IE should continue their effort to find a suitable pin and socket type from a PWR.

If no PWR pin and socket type connector is suitable for test, then Sandia will use the Conax connector for the Commission requested test.

It was concluded that testing of the Conax connector would be worthwhile as part of the Sandia methodology assessment and that even if not tested as rirt of the Commission requested program it should be tested as soon as possible.

W. Rutherford and R. Feit explained that the difficulty in finding a suitable PWR connector is that there are only about seven or eight plants currently in operation that use pin and socket connectors. Many of the original nineteen plants have replaced their connectors with splices.

The new plants under current review will qualify connectors to the 1974 version of IEEE-323 and none of these qualification have been reviewed ana spproved at this time. Thus, in keeping with the ground rules established for these Commission requested tests they can not be

%g',;

used because they are not qualified. Of the connectors left in older plants many of the suppliers can no longer produce the connector cur-rently in the plant.

Furthermore, because of the lack of adequat? spare assemblies there is a reluctance to take connectors from operating plants.

D. Mcdonald und A. Szukiewicz requested that they be given an indication of the disposition of their earlier comments on the test plan for the Bendix Connectors.

R. Feit indicated that all comments were accepted in principle and that Sandia will submit a revised test plan including the Conax testing before the test is run. At least three weeks should be available for review prior to initiating any tests.

The cover letter transmitting the revised test plan will delineate the changes made.

Rutherford pointed out that any changes in the test plan have to be reviewed by IE, since they have the overall QA responsibility for the Mcdonald and Szukiewicz agreed to send copies of their comments p rog ram.
