JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 2 - WITHDRAWAL OF PROPOSED INSERVICE INSPECTION ALTERNATIVE FNP-ISI-ALT-05-06, VERSION 1.0 (EPID L-2020-LLR-0033)
Dear Ms. Gayheart:
By letter dated February 24, 2020 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML20055F672), Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (SNC),
submitted proposed alternative FNP-ISI-ALT-05-06, Version 1.0, for the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant (Farley), Unit 2. SNC proposed to allow American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Case N-729-4, Inspection Item B4.40 for Reactor Vessel Closure Head (RVCH) nozzle and partial penetration welds of Primary Water Stress Corrosion Cracking (PWSCC)-resistant materials to be re-examined once every 20 years for Farley, Unit 2, in lieu of the current approved examination frequency of 15 years as documented in the associated NRC safety evaluation of May 5, 2015 (ADAMS Accession No. ML15104A192).
By letter dated May 22, 2020 (ADAMS Accession No. ML20143A171), SNC requested to withdraw FNP-ISI-ALT-05-06, Version 1.0, because ASME Code Case N-729-6 was recently approved for incorporation by reference in 10 CFR 50.55a for unconditional use and also allows Inspection Item B4.40 for RVCH nozzle and partial penetration welds of PWSCC-resistant materials to be re-examined once every 20 years. SNC stated that this negates the need for SNC's proposed alternative. This letter acknowledges the withdrawal of FNP-ISI-ALT-05-06, Version 1.0, for Farley, Unit 2. No further NRC staff review will be performed under EPID L-2020-LLR-0033.
