20555 Gentlemen:

1 DOCKET NOS. 50-266 AND 50-301 RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 88-03 RESOLUTION OF SAFETY ISSUE 93 STEAM BINDING OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMPS POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 Generic Letter 88-03 dated February 17, 1988 perpetuated actions taken as a result of IE Bulletin 85-01, "Steam Binding of Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps."

We responded to that bulleti!. by letter dated February 25, 1986..In that letter we committed to once per Fhift monitoring of AFW piping temperatures and j

implementation of procedures for detecting steam binding and restoring AFW pumps to service.

i This letter is to confirm that a once per shift check of AFW piping temperatures is required at PBNP and is included in the Point Beach Fuclear Plant Unit 1 Turbine Auxiliary Operator Logs.

This check will continue to be made.

Abnormal Operating Procedure AOP-2C, Auxiliary Feedwater Pump Steam Binding or Overheating, addresses recognition of potential and actual steam binding and restoration actions at PBNP and will be maintained.

In addition to the above actiot.s, as a' result of our review performed for IE Information Notice 84-06, "Steam Binding of Auxiliary Feedwater Pumps," we removed lagging from portions of AFW piping inside containment.

This increases heat loss should relatively hot main feedwater leak ay AFW check valves.

Thus should leakage occur, the water is cooled prior to reaching the AFW pumps, rainimizing or eliminating the possibility of water flashing to steam in AFW pumps.
