Does the Comission interpret the ban on importing uranium from South Africa to extend beyond uranium oxide to manufactured forms such as uranium hexafluoride'l ANSWER The preliminary view of the Comission is that the uranium import ban applies only to "uranium ore and oxide produced or manufactured in South Africa", as stated in Section 309 of the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986.
However, the Comission has not yet received the formal views of the Executive Branch on this matter and, in the meantime, has revised NRC's import licensing regulations to require a specific license for the import of any uranium of South African origin.
