Dear Mr. Adams:
SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR VERIFICATION OF FINAL SURVEY AND ISSUANCE OF ORDER TO TERMINATE LICENSE NO. R-127 (Docket No. 50-538)
In accordance with your order dated January 26,1988, we have moved the defueled components of the AGN-201 training reactor approximately one (1) foot to allow for survey readings of the reactor and all surrounding areas. All components will remain in their present locations until an order to terminate the license and remove components is received from the N.R.C.. The following radiological surveys were made:
- 1. Survey of Building #113. This building houses the reactor and all related activities. (See attachment #1)
- 2. Survey of rooms 140, 140A, 140A1, and 140A2. These rooms make up the reactor room and control room as well as a closet containing the air conditioning unit for this area. (See attachment #2)
- 3. Smearable surface contamination of AGN-201 components.
(See attachment #2-Upper right corner)
The surveys were conducted using a Ludlum, Model-19, serial no. 32881, Micro R Meter. This instrument was calibrated by Radiation Service Organization of Laurel, Maryland. (See ,

Page 2 March 24, 1988 The smearable surface contamination counting was obtained using a shielded G-M counting system consisting of a thin window GM tube (serial no. 7181), a shielded counting pig (Gamma Products Lab.-
Model G40-serial no. 557) and a Nucleus-Model 550 Scaler / Timer (serial no.8304-071). This system was calibrated by Assistant Professor Lewis O' Kelly of the Memphis State University Physics Department. The swipes were checked for alpha contamination using a Ludlum- Model 3- G.C. serial no. 5011) and a Ludlum- Model 43-5 Alpha Probe (serial no. 11115) . This unit was calibrated by Ludlum Instruments on 6/5/87.
Attachment #1 shows the results of a survey of Building #113 which houses the AGN-201 and all related activities. All readings were taken approximately one (1) meter from the floor using a Ludlum-Model 19-Micro R Meter. This instrument was calibrated by RSO Inc.
on October 26, 1987. (See attached Calibration Certificate--
dttaChment #3)
Attachment #2 shows a survey of the AGN-201 facility and control room, specifically rooms 140, 140A, 140A1 and 140A2. All readings were taken approximately one (1) meter from the floor, with the exception of the three readings taken inside the AGN-201. A reading of 10 micro R/ hour was obtained by suspending the meter inside the empty shield tank. A reading of 8 micro R/ hour was obtained by placing the meter atop the second lead shielding ring after removing the top ring. A reading of 4 micro R/ hour was obtained by suspending the meter to Glory Hole level in the center of the graphite reflector ring with the Aluminum core tank remove..
The table in the upper right corner of attachment #2 shows the locations and results of swipe tests done to detect the presence of removable surface contamination on varjous AGN-201 components as well as several swipes of the facility such as floor, table, etc. All swipes were read for Beta and Gamma contamination using a Shielded G-M Counting System consisting of a thin window GM tube (serial no. 7181), a shielded counting pig (Gamma Products Lab.-
Model G40- serial no. 557) and a Nucleus-Model 550- Scaler / Timer (serial no. 8204-071). This counting system was calibrated by Assistant Professor Lewis B. O' Kelly of the Memphis State An Equal Opp 3rtunityl Affirmathe Action Unhtrsity
Mr. Alexander Adams, Jr.
Page 3 March 24, 1988 University Physics Department. The swipes were then read for Alpha contamination using a Ludlum-Model 3-G.C. (serial no. 5011) and a Ludlum-Model 43-5 Alpha Frobe (serial no. 11115). This unit was calibrated by Ludlum Instruments on 6/5/87. The grid lines depicted on attachment #2 have been physically marked on the floor of the reactor facility and control room to facilitate verification.
