Letter, P.B. Perez, NCSU, to USNRC Region ll Administrator, Notification of a Reportable Eventin Accordance with the NCSU PULSTAR Reactor's Technical Specifications Reporting Requirements, dated 2 May 1997

Dear Sir or Madam:

North Carolina State University notified the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission on 2 May 1997 of a reportable event regarding liquid effluent levels. An error in the counting efficiency determination resulted in under-estimating the actual concentration and activity of tritium released to the sanitary sewer. However, the corrected tritium concentrations in all cases remain below: (1) 10 CFR 20 Appendix B, Table 3 sanitary sewer discharge concentration limit by a factor of 100, and (2) 10 CFR 20.2001 annual total activity release limit by a factor of over 1000.

The efficiency error affected item 6.7.5.f.1 in the previous three annual reports. Corrective actions to this event included correcting the affected annual reports. The attached three tables on the following page summarize the corrected data. The previously reported numbers are provided as a reference in the shaded cells.

Please feel free to contact me at (919) 515-4602 or Mr. Gerald Wicks, Reactor Health Physicist at (919) 515-4601 if you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely yours, 97060$0255 970527 DR ADOCK 05000297 1
