Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant Insenice Inspection Program ASME Code Update Ladies and Gentlemen:
i Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) is herein submitting the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) Unit I and 2 Insenice Inspection (ISI) Programs in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR50.55a(g)(4)(ii). SNC is updating the ISI Program for Units 1 and 2 to the code of record t
referenced in paragraph (b) of 10CFR50.55a which is the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI,1989 Edition.
By letter dated January 9,1997 SNC requested authorization to update the Unit 2 ISI program 44 months 4 carly on December 1,1997 in conjunction with the 120-month update of the Unit I program so that both units will be updated to a common AShiE Section XI Code edition for ISI. The NRC approved this request by letter dated March 20,1997. FNP Unit I will begin its third ten-year ISI interval on December 1,1997 working to the 1989 Code. FNP Unit 2 is presently in the second ten-year ISI inten'al with the third interval scheduled to start on July 30,2001; therefore, this update will cover part of the second and third intervals. It is SNC's intention to continue the practice of updating the ISI Programs for Units 1 and 2 concurrently for the remainder of plant life. Therefore the next update v.ill be on December 1,2007 for both units.
SNC will begin implementation of the updated ISI Program for Unit I and Unit 2 on December 1,1997.

1997 in order to facilitate the implementation of the updated program procedures.
